Summary of Collision Repair & Refinish Standards Revisions

The number of hours in GMAW (Mig) welding was reduced to 75. The number of hours in Non-Structural Analysis and Damage Repair was increased to 300 (375 if welding is taught in this area). The number of hours in Painting & Refinishing was reduced to 300. The overall total of 1,100 hours for programs certified in all four areas remains the same. Please refer to item 3 on page 4 in the Collision Repair & Refinish Minimum Requirements section of the manual.

The wording and priority designations of some tasks were changed, but the requirement to teach 95% of HP-I and 90% of HP-G tasks remains the same.

A letter from the Program Administrator indicating that the school is aware of OSHA requirements on respiratory protection for respirator fit testing and filter change remains in effect. NATEF added a recommendation that all programs follow the EPA’s Design for the Environment (DfE) Project publications which can be accessed on the DfE website at www.epa.gov/dfe/pubs/projects/auto. See item 12 on page 6 in the Collision Repair & Refinish Minimum Requirements section of the manual.

A copy of the compliance document from the state or local fire regulatory official stating that the lab/shop area used by the collision repair & refinish program meets National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) guidelines is required. See item 13 on page 6 in the Collision Repair & Refinish Minimum Requirements section of the manual.
