AUTOMOBILE TECHNICIAN TRAINING CERTIFICATION PROGRAM
The Board of the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE)
is the body responsible for the Automobile Technician Training Certification
Program. ASE will grant certification to programs that comply with the evaluation
procedure, meet established standards, and adhere to the policies in this document.
The Certification Program is under the direct supervision of the Board of Trustees
of the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) and such
personnel designated or employed by the Foundation.
The purpose of the Automobile Technician Training Certification Program is
to improve the quality of training offered at the secondary and post-secondary
levels. NATEF does not endorse specific curricular materials nor provide instruction
to individuals, groups or institutions. It does, however, set standards for
the content of instruction, which includes tasks, tools and equipment, hours,
and instructor qualifications.
The Program is a certification program only and is not associated with the
accreditation role of other agencies.
The cost to each program for certification will be as reasonable as possible
to encourage program participation. This cost will include self-evaluation materials,
application (processing) fee, on-site team evaluation materials, and the honorarium
and expenses of the Evaluation Team Leader (ETL).
The eight Automobile areas that may be certified are:
1. Brakes
2. Electrical/Electronic Systems
3. Engine Performance
4. Suspension and Steering
5. Automatic Transmission and Transaxle
6. Engine Repair
7. Heating and Air Conditioning
8. Manual Drive Train and Axles
Four areas are required for minimum certification or recertification: Brakes,
Electrical/Electronic Systems, Engine Performance, and Suspension & Steering.
