Welcome to the Applied Academics and Workplace Skills for
Automobile, Collision Repair & Refinish, and Medium/Heavy Truck Technician
training programs!
This work was completed as part of a US Department of Education Skills
Standards Grant to demonstrate the level of academic skills required of
automotive technicians. A background and the process used for the project
can be found in the Introduction section of the manual.
The Narrative Statements for Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science
were developed for use with the general public. They were developed from the
definitions and many combine several skills within the discipline.
The Crosswalk and Definitions list each of the Related Academic Skills (RAS)
Codes and Descriptions used from the Snyder Basic Skills Taxonomy. The Crosswalk
indicates whether a specific academic skill is used in at least one of the tasks
in each of the NATEF task areas. The Definitions give an example of how the skill
is used by technicians in general terms.
The Related Academic Skills section provides the Snyder Codes and Descriptions with
an example specific to the NATEF task area.
The most recent NATEF Task List is also included.
The applied academics sections can be used to facilitate the channels of
communication between the academic and the automotive technology instructors.
Automotive instructors can use the examples to show the application of academics
in the curriculum. Academic instructors can see how academic skills can be applied
in context of automotive technology.
We'd be interested in knowing how the applied academics document has been useful
for your program so we can pass along suggestions for others. Please email any
information that you would like to share with other programs to webmaster@natef.org.
